“Water is good, air is better, but light is best of all”
Arnold Rikli’s “atmospheric cure” model, which started in 1852, in the Slovenian town of Bled, is transported to the high plateaus of the Atacama Desert and implemented there, to offer the Lickan Antay indigenous community the opportunity to recover their economy, culture, and natural environment. After repeatedly struggling with threats and invasions, like the Pinochet dictatorship, the community’s traditions and intangible cultural heritage has gradually diminished. The project seeks potential in the tourist industry (which is currently a threat to them), and attempts to transform it by proposing a platform that empowers the local community, giving them back the control over the land, environment, and traditions, and providing them with economic opportunities. Guests staying there will seek a spiritual isolation retreat with nature, and immerse themselves in the Lickan Antay culture.
The design process starts from a single prototype unit, inspired by the spatial needs of different psychological conditions. These ways of inhabiting space are further developed and used as a metaphor that could later be applied to anyone. The prototype adapts to the conditions of the site with the implementation of local materials and construction methods that come together to become the Health Retreat.

El modelo de “cura atmosférica” creado por Arnold Rikli en 1852 en el pueblo Esloveno de Bled, es transportado a los altiplanos del desierto de Atacama en Chile e implementado ahí con el objetivo de ofrecer a la comunidad indígena Lickan Antay la oportunidad de recuperar su economía, cultura, y entorno natural. Después de sufrir numerosas amenazas a invasiones, como la dictadura de Pinochet, las tradiciones de la comunidad y el patrimonio cultural intangible se han visto gradualmente perjudicados. El proyecto busca potencial en la industria turística, la cual hoy en día está pobremente gestionada, e intenta transformarla proponiendo una plataforma que les devolverá el control de su tierra, entorno y tradiciones, ofreciéndoles nuevas oportunidades económicas. Los clientes buscarán un retiro espiritual en contacto con la naturaleza mientras se sumergen en la cultura Lickan Antay.
El proceso de diseño parte de un prototipo modular, inspirado en las necesidades espaciales de distintas condiciones psicológicas. Las maneras de habitar el espacio continúa en desarrollo y esta idea se utiliza más adelante como una metáfora que podría ser aplicable a cualquier persona. El prototipo se adapta gradualmente a las condiciones del entorno con la implementación de materiales y métodos constructivos locales que se unen para formar parte del espacio de retiro.
